Character can be defined as, “the ethical
traits marking a person:
attributes, held values.”
Therefore, character development is challenging
people to accept and demonstrate positive values.
Whatever the current condition of one’s
character, there is always the potential to improve in
both attitude and action. So
what does “putting Christian principles into practice”
really mean? A
YMCA’s mission statement is a starting point, an
operating standard, and a basis for evaluation. A principle can be defined as a “code of
conduct; a basis for action.”
Throughout the history of the YMCA we have looked
to Christian teachings in the Bible as our source of
positive principles. The “Christian principles” in our mission statement are
expressed through the four core values of the YMCA
character development: Caring, Honesty, Respect and
Responsibility.
